A little about us...

Select Auto provides appraisal services for late model, custom and collector cars, trucks and motorcycles.  We are a boutique appraisal service run by a life-long car enthusiast.

I am a passionate about cars, trucks, and motorcycles.  I have had many makes and models of “cool-to-me” vehicles over the years, but I always end up drifting back to Japanese or European cars as my personal favorites. Having said that, I appreciate the various marques and I really enjoy talking cars with anyone. I’ve done several total restorations over the years including all the mechanical and bodywork/paint.  My most recent and ongoing resto is a 70 VW Karmann Ghia with a complete body-off and an EJ 25 swap from an 03 Imprezza.

I don’t do concours-level restorations (not even close), but having done this work myself over the years has allowed me to gain a true appreciation for the amount of time and money that goes into a restoration, even at the hobbiest level.  This experience, along with my obsession with vehicles, goes a long way towards me providing you with the best appraisal possible!

Services Offered

We offer different types of appraisals to suit your needs:

Valuation Appraisal

This is a detailed report highlighting overall condition, modifications, upgrades or problem areas, uniqueness of the vehicle, etc.  The report is 10-15 pages and includes approximately 15 - 20 pictures and comments on all aspects of the vehicle’s condition.  It will establish a current fair market value (fmv) on the vehicle, which can potentially save you a lot of money with your insurance company if you have any type of loss.

Cost: This depends on the vehicle and the location, but a valuation appraisal typically runs around $225 plus HST.

Ministry Appraisal (taxes)

This is a type of appraisal done primarily for tax purposes when you purchase a vehicle.  The form used is the “Motor Vehicle Appraisal Record”, form # 1159.  If the vehicle is 20 years or older, you will need to have this type of appraisal done prior to registering the vehicle.  Also, if the purchase price is lower than the wholesale price listed on the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP), and there is a reason why the price is lower than what is listed on the UVIP (high mileage, previous accident, mechanical issues, etc),  it will be worthwhile to have the actual value of the vehicle shown on the appraisal form because that is what you pay taxes on when registering the vehicle.  This often saves hundreds of dollars in taxes.  This form is also used for the Ontario Student Assisstance Program (OSAP) application, and for legal reasons (divorce, estate settlement, etc).

Cost: This depends on the vehicle and the location, but a Ministry appraisal typically runs around $60 plus HST.

NOTE – I will not do this type of appraisal without seeing the vehicle, unlike some other appraisers or used car dealers!

Pre-purchase Inspection/Appraisal

If you want additional peace of mind prior to purchasing a vehicle, we offer this service as well.  I can do this at your location or at my shop, where the vehicle is put on a lift and it undergoes a comprehensive inspection.  These pre-purchase inspections can also include a road test if desired, and also includes a detailed report.

Cost: This depends on the vehicle, location and how detailed of an inspection that you desire.  Prices start at $100 for a visual inspection and up to $400, which includes a detailed mechanical inspection on the lift, road test, CARFAX, UVIP, Ministry Appraisal and Valuation Appraisal.

Contact Us

Please call anytime between 9am and 8pm any day of the week (705-627-0184).  If I can’t take your call, just leave a short message and I’ll get back to you within 12 hours or sooner.  I don’t have an automated, “smart” answering system with a chatbot or virtual assistant.  I despise those!  If you prefer to speak to a real person that can answer your questions clearly and correctly, just give me a call.  If you prefer, you can send me an email: bernie@selectautoappraisal.com, or you can send me a message (form below).

Thanks, Bernie

Location

We are located at 18 Mill Steet in Angus.  Many of the appraisals that I do are for vehicles that are not yet registered, or are in storage.  Most owners find it more convienient for me to come to their location to appraise their vehicle, or you can come to me if you prefer.  I typically limit my range to Simcoe County, but I do travel farther for speciality vechicles that I am interested in seeing, or for members of the automotive clubs that I belong to.  I am availble seven days a week most times, and I can normally complete an appraisal for you within a day or two of you contacting me.  I understand how difficult it can be to get all of the documentation sorted out when trying to register a vehicle, so I make myself available evenings and weekends in addition to normal working hours.  It’s always best to call so we can discuss your situation and come up with a time that works best for you.  Feel free to send me a message if you prefer.
